Abbreviations used in English Communications

The Metric System of measurement is used in Canada.

Canada officially follows the International Metric System. Temperatures, distance, weights, velocity are expressed in metric units.

The Liberal federal government of Pierre Trudeau first began implementing metrication in Canada in 1970 with a government agency dedicated to implementing the project, the Metric Commission, being established in 1971 by the Weights and Measures Act.

The election of the Progressive Conservative government of Brian Mulroney in 1984 resulted in the abolition of the Metric Commission on March 31, 1985. This ended the process of affirmative metrication in Canada, and some regulations requiring metric measurements either have been repealed or are no longer enforced.

Cars have metric speedometers and odometers however the railways Canadian National and Canadian Pacific as well as commuter rail services, continue to measure their trackage in miles and speed limits in miles per hour

Most kitchen appliances in Canada are labelled with both degrees Celsius and Fahrenheit, and metric cooking measures are widely available; but Fahrenheit is often used for cooking due to the import of kitchen appliances from the United States. When cooking, Canadians typically use a mix of both measures depending on the recipe and cook book - use a mix of grams, millilitres, cups, ounces and tablespoons.

The Canadian National Exhibition

The world class performers and spectacular air shows are the really big draws every year in August at the Canadian National Exhibition. Everyone in Toronto knows when the Canadian International Air Show is on at the "Ex" as the loud, fast and spectacular jets dance over the Toronto sky.

Each summer I go to the CNE with students. This summer it is to see the "Super Dogs" and shop in the international pavilion. Last summer it was to see the world record holder "Human Cannon Ball" and the "Fire and Ice" show.

The "CNE or Ex" is a wonderful field trip for international students to learn English and see products, cultural exhibits, foods, performers and people from across Canada and every other country in the world. Every new item triggers questions and learning opportunities as students expand their vocabulary and language fluency.

Every year the CNE features a nice combination of regular performers along with new acts, performers and shows. It is comfortable to see familiar performers do new tricks to excite and wow the crowds.

One of the new shows "Wonders of Dance and Music" presents a fusion of Brazilian Carnival Samba, Flamenco, Tango, Arabic and Gypsy dance masterpieces integrated into one high-energy musical expression.

Another new show is "The Movie Song Show" where singers and dancers perform hit songs and scenes from famous movies like Flashdance, Top Gun, Back to the Future, The Bodyguard, Men in Black, Moulin Rouge, Chicago, and Titanic.

The Toronto Urban Music Festival is a presentation of Urban Music with new performers and regular performers with news songs and new routines. The show presents a wide variety of contemporary urban music including Hip Hop and Rap.

There are many smaller venue stages all over the Exhibition grounds to see performers. Toronto Star Bandshell, Global Food Building Stage, The Green Thumb Garden Theatre, Rogers International Stage, Kids? World Feature Stage, Labatt Blue Midway Stage, Remember When Pavilion, Renovation Stage, Rock Valley Cafe, A Taste of the World Gourmet Theatre and TTC Stage. The TTC Stage hosts the TTC Busker Auditions to hundreds of hopefuls that come to the CNE and audition for their chance to entertain you on the TTC.

International students recognize foods, clothes, gift items, collectable's from their countries and have the opportunity to explain in English what they are, their cultural or historical significance to other international students that have never seen them before. In many ways it is like traveling to the most exotic global markets without having to pay airfare.

The best prices for shopping can occur at the CNE as many outlet shops, importers and clearance jobbers sell products at huge discounts. Students like to buy dictionaries for one dollar, or learn English CD sets for 3 dollars instead of the regular list price of thirty dollars. I like to buy books, software, music cd's, vhs tapes, dvd's and other resource materials for my classes at a 75 to 90 percent discount and so do the students.

The CNE exhibits are everywhere and have something for everyone. Some students stay in the FOOD Building and try foods from around the world. Some students love the gardens, gardening, and landscaping. Some students love the agricultural exhibits with all the food products, farm animals, farm equipment and the horse shows. Other students play at the sports pavilion to test their abilities with new sports challenges. Some like to see arts and crafts and art displays others like to participate in the "how to" demonstrations and create their own art piece. Some students just like to play the latest sega video games or sony games "be" pc gamers or x box pros and play on the newest equipment or game platform.

The final day of the CNE is Labour Day.

See you then!!

Summerlicious Toronto’s Favourite Summer Food Event

Mayor John Tory announced the City of Toronto’s popular Summerlicious program is returning this summer from August 12 to 28. Summerlicious was cancelled in 2020 and 2021.

Summerlicious 2022 has been designed to make it easier for restaurants to participate and to encourage more Toronto residents to dine-in and celebrate the city’s diverse culinary scene.

The program has been renewed to help the local industry generate much-needed revenue while also encouraging and building confidence in people so that they choose to safely enjoy indoor and patio dining again.

The Winterlicious and Summerlicious programs began in 2003 as a way to boost Toronto’s restaurant industry during historically slow periods of business.

The Winterlicious and Summerlicious restaurants have served more than 7.9 million meals, generating more than $353 million for the local restaurant industry.

Summerlicious 2022 Program Details

  • Participating restaurants must offer a 3-course prix fixe menu for lunch and/or dinner, according to their regular business hours, and for on-premises dining (indoor and patio, if available).

  • Prix fixe menu(s) must be priced at one of the program’s expanded range of price point categories.

New changes for Summerlicious 2022

  • Free restaurant participation (no fee)
  • Expanded range of price point categories for 3-course prix fixe Summerlicious menus, both lower and higher than the traditional three price point categories (beverages, tax and gratuity not included):

    • $27 Lunch / $35 Dinner
    • $34 Lunch / $45 Dinner
    • $41 Lunch / $55 Dinner
    • $48 Lunch / $65 Dinner (new price point category)
    • $55 Lunch / $75 Dinner (new price point category)

Daniel Dale Canadian Fact-checking Journalist

When CNN hired Dale away from the Toronto Star last year, he was on his way to becoming a household name in the U.S.

Dale says being Canadian gives him an advantage over his American counterparts.

“He didn’t grow up in this media culture that is so deferential to the president that they’re afraid to call a lie a lie. He hasn’t grown up in this media culture where because of national security, reporters are afraid to get involved in saying that the government is not telling the truth.”

Dale agrees that his Canadian roots make a difference.

Study English in Toronto Online Classes

The online classes can be designed for individual students or groups of students.

Classes use combinations of zoom, whatsapp, facetime, text, voip, email and other platforms.

All online teachers are Canadian certified and experienced teachers.

 Email: eslincanada@gmail.com

How ESL in Canada Recommends Classes

ESL in Canada recommends both free and commercial ESL English classes for example:

the FREE Toronto ESL Cafe English conversation classes, the free LINC classes for new Canadians, the free English classes at many libraries, the free classes at accredited TESL Teaching schools, and some excellent Board of Education continuing education classes that cost 2 or 3 dollars per instructional hour.

ESL in Canada recommends a few affiliated ESL schools with colleges and universities. Some affiliated ESL programs earn the students credits towards an undergraduate degree and enable entry into the regular college or university programs.

Some affiliated programs are not recommended because even some public colleges and universities used ESL students as a money grab, dumping dozens of the same L1 into a class and allowing L1 to be spoken 90% of the time. The college made $$ and the students learned almost nothing.

ESL in Canada recommends a few English classes at excellent independent ESL schools that cost between 12 to 18 dollars per hour with their teachers and their programs and some excellent private ESL and Business English teachers that charge between 20 and 65 dollars per hour.

English Conversation Classes

We know that English Language Conversation Skills consist of language abilities, conversation skills, social skills, culture knowledge and non-verbal communication skills.

English Conversation Lessons can be on one or more of the language skills or fully integrated practice sessions.

English conversation lesson examples include consonant and vowel pronunciation, syllable stress patterns in words, intonation and timing for phrases and expressions, polite words, formal vocabulary, slang and jargon use, correct greetings, use of active sentence constructions, listening carefully, answering directly, using correct gestures to reinforce or further explain spoken words.

English Conversation Classes tend to be fully integrated practice sessions. The conversation partner can be fellow language students or native speakers or ESL teachers.

The English Conversation Classes can be free-flowing with no corrections or be interrupted for corrections or interrupted for corrections and specific lesson review and then continued.

Some English Conversation Class ESL teachers require their students to write new vocabulary words and some will record the entire conversation class so that the students can play back the entire class to repeat and review all the words and pronunciation.

English Conversation Classes can be practice sessions for casual, informal, gossip, face-to-face and everyday conversations.

English Conversation Classes can be practice sessions for conferences, formal, polite, interview, two-way, presentations, consultation, or business small talk.

English Conversation Classes can be practice sessions for chitchat, Q and A, heart-to-heart talk, confab, powwow, bull sessions, talkfest, gabfest, pillow talk and rap sessions.

English Conversation Classes can be fully integrated practice sessions for academic subjects, leisure topics, politics, religion, sports, hobbies, activities, and interests.

English Conversation Classes can be fully integrated practice sessions for sports. The class can be structured to talk about amateur sports, Olympic sports or professional sports and maybe a specific sport like hockey or football. The sports conversation classes can cover sub-topics like leagues, past winners, current standings, coaches, owners, star players, salaries, statistics, dream teams, and future predictions.

English Conversation Classes can be fully integrated practice sessions for business conversations. How to introduce yourself, your company and your products for sale. How to present to one person and small groups and larger groups. How to ask questions and how to answer questions. How to compare and contrast products and services. How to negotiate prices.

English Conversation Classes can be fully integrated practice sessions for music or movies. Some of the classes can be academic and discuss genre or style or methods. Some of the classes can be gossip such as "Brad and Angelina did this ..." or "Britney Spears was seen doing ..."

As a summary English Conversation Classes can be designed for the number, age, level and interests of the students. English Conversation Classes can be designed for the type of conversation, subjects of the conversation, topics and sub-topics of the conversation.
