How to Write English Sentences - Introduction

Before you write an English sentence you have to get organized.

The first stage of organization is choosing the single or complete thought that you are stating, describing, explaining or asking. The thought should include 1. a subject, and 2. an action or state of being.

Lets describe the different available subjects to be used in our example sentence.

You can use yourself as the subject of your sentence. You can use your brothers or sisters or any or all of your family members as the subject of your sentence. You can use neighbors, friends, people you know, even people you do not know as the subject of your sentence. In fact you can use anybody (living or dead) as the subject of your sentence.

Maybe you want to use your pet dog or goldfish as the subject of your sentence. You can use any (living or dead) insect, bird, mammal, reptile, fish, bacteria or any creature as the subject of your sentence.

Maybe you want to use your new toy, Sentence Master Game, computer software, hybrid car, house, office or space pen as the subject of your sentence. You can use any naturally constructed or man made items or objects as the subject of your sentence.

Maybe you want to use another person's new car, laptop computer, motorcycle or funny tie as the subject of your sentence. You can use any other person's naturally constructed or man made items or objects as the subject of your sentence.

Maybe you want to use your pet dog's possessions as the subject of your sentence. You can use any (living or dead) insect, bird, mammal, reptile, fish, bacteria or any creature's possessions or objects as the subject of your sentence.

You may want to use your actions as your subject of your sentence. You can use swimming or running as subjects for your sentence. Almost all visible actions can be sentence subjects.

You may want to use another person's actions as the subject of your sentence. You can use their swimming or running as subjects for your sentence. Almost all visible actions performed by another can be sentence subjects.

You may want to use a natural process or an animal's or machines' actions as the subject of your sentence. Almost all visible actions performed by mother nature, all creatures and machines can be used as sentence subjects.

You may want to use invisible actions as your subject of your sentence. These invisible actions are also described as intangible actions. You can use your thinking or dreaming or wondering as intangible actions as subject of your sentence.

You may want to use another person's invisible or intangible actions as the subject of your sentence. You can use another person's daydreaming or fantasizing as intangible actions as subject of your sentence.

You may use your state of being as the subject of your sentence. The state of being is also considered an intangible item. You can use your feeling happy or sad as the intangible subject of your sentence.

You may also use another person's state of being as the subject of your sentence. You can use their feeling happy or sad as the intangible subject of your sentence.

You may want to use an un-real item or action or state of being as the subject or your sentence. You can use imaginary people, animals, objects, planets, actions, thoughts, and other intangibles as the subject of your sentence. In fact you can use imaginary characteristics of your imaginary friend's pet "axelyrty" as the subject of your sentence.

You may want to use a small amount of imagination and only use imaginary thoughts or feelings or actions to a real person, animal, object or machine.

As a writer of English sentences you have an extremely wide choice of available subjects. you can use English sentences to write about anything both real and unreal.

The second stage of organization is choosing 2. an action or state of being.

Let's describe the different available actions or states of being that can be used in our sentences.

We can use visible, invisible or intangible actions in our sentence. We can use real or unreal actions in our sentence.

We can use visible, invisible or intangible states of being in our sentence. We can use real or unreal states of being in our sentence.

The very simple aspect about writing English sentences is that if you can think about "it" then "it" can probably be used as an action or state of being and even a subject in an English sentence.

The next "How to write Sentences" will discuss sentence types and sentence constructions.

How to Write a 5 Paragraph Essay or Report

Titles

A title should be an honest label of the contents of your essay or report.

Simple, short and clear so it is understood quickly.

Specifically connected to the essay’s main ideas.

Attractive, to make the reader want to read the essay.

Capitalize all words except the small words (a, the, an, for and so on) or, capitalize the whole word.

Remember a topic is not a title!

Introduction

An introduction contains a topic sentence that conveys the main idea or statement of the essay. This is the most important sentence of your whole essay and needs to be the most carefully written.

Introductions are general compared to the ideas in the essay, but related directly to the ideas in the essay. Don’t give away too much. Save the details for the body.

Body Paragraphs (3)

The body is the center of the sandwich. Body paragraphs are a standard design: topic sentence, detailed examples with a concluding sentence. The body paragraphs support the topic and provides supportive examples with descriptions, and details.

Make it easy for the reader to follow from sentence to sentence and from paragraph to paragraph. Keep to one idea in one paragraph. Each of these ideas relates directly to the topic.

Put your best paragraph first, weakest in the middle and your second best paragraph last.

Conclusion

The conclusion is usually larger than the introduction.

Restate your topic as the first sentence of the conclusion.

Summarize the ideas of the body paragraphs without repeating everything point-by-point.

Conclusions often contain a final opinion, suggestion or prediction related to the topic that ends the essay.

****

Marking Criteria for 5 Paragraph Essays

Writing Conventions:

These are the basic parts of your writing: the spelling, punctuation, grammar, and
sentence structure. Do errors make it hard to understand your writing?

Logic:

Logic determines the order of your writing and how easy it is to follow your ideas. Proper logic determines how well your introduction, body, and conclusion work together and how logical your order of ideas are inside each paragraph.

Style:

Here, your sentence variety and use of idioms and vocabulary are very important. How fluent is your language? Are your sentences precise? Good essays exhibit a good repertoire of sentence types, along with a strong vocabulary.

Meaning:

Is the topic and ideas specific to your own experience and have they been conveyed well. Did you show with details exactly what you mean? Did you save your assertions for the topic and "statement making" sentences? Are your ideas convincing? Are they mature? Are they explained logically?

Originality

Originality can dramatically improve the reader's experience but can be a unnecessary distraction for some topics. Is there a balance between accuracy, statements for effect and originality based on the topic?

Every Monday evening from 7 to 8:30 PM there are free "ESL" English as a second language lessons and classes.

The free English conversation classes are offered at the Saint Paul's Anglican Church located at 227 Bloor Street East, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

St. Paul's is located about 200 meters east of the Yonge and Bloor Street intersection on the south side of Bloor Street.

If traveling by subway you can exit at Yonge and Bloor - then walk east on the south side for about 2 minutes.

To enter use the big glass doors between the main church and the Reception Hall and follow the sign "ESL Cafe" to the right.

St Paul's provides the location as a public service to the community and provides tea and coffee which usually goes well with cookies. I bring my favourite chocolate chip or maple cookies and you are welcome to bring your favourite cookies.

The ESL English instruction is provided by volunteers. The volunteers have patience, enthusiasm, good-will towards all and some even have ESL teacher certification.

The ESL English conversation classes are at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.

The 2009 Canadian National Exhibition

The world class performers and spectacular air shows are the really big draws every year at the Canadian National Exhibition. Everyone in Toronto knows when the Canadian International Air Show is on at the "Ex" as the loud, fast and spectacular jets dance over the Toronto sky.

Each summer I go to the CNE with students. The "CNE or Ex" is a wonderful field trip for international students to learn English and see products, cultural exhibits, foods, performers and people from across Canada and every other country in the world. Every new item triggers questions and learning opportunities as students expand their vocabulary and language fluency.

Every year the CNE features a nice combination of regular performers along with new acts, performers and shows. It is comfortable to see familiar performers do new tricks to excite and wow the crowds.

One of the new shows "Wonders of Dance and Music" presents a fusion of Brazilian Carnival Samba, Flamenco, Tango, Arabic and Gypsy dance masterpieces integrated into one high-energy musical expression.

Another new show is "The Movie Song Show" where singers and dancers perform hit songs and scenes from famous movies like Flashdance, Top Gun, Back to the Future, The Bodyguard, Men in Black, Moulin Rouge, Chicago, and Titanic.

The Toronto Urban Music Festival is a presentation of Urban Music with new performers and regular performers with news songs and new routines. The show presents a wide variety of contemporary urban music including Hip Hop and Rap.

There are many smaller venue stages all over the Exhibition grounds to see performers. Toronto Star Bandshell, Global Food Building Stage, The Green Thumb Garden Theatre, Rogers International Stage, Kids’ World Feature Stage, Labatt Blue Midway Stage, Remember When Pavilion, Renovation Stage, Rock Valley Café, A Taste of the World Gourmet Theatre and TTC Stage. The TTC Stage hosts the TTC Busker Auditions to hundreds of hopefuls that come to the CNE and audition for their chance to entertain you on the TTC.

International students recognize foods, clothes, gift items, collectable's from their countries and have the opportunity to explain in English what they are, their cultural or historical significance to other international students that have never seen them before. In many ways it is like traveling to the most exotic global markets without having to pay airfare.

The best prices for for shopping can occur at the CNE as many outlet shops, importers and clearance jobbers sell products at huge discounts. Students like to buy dictionaries for one dollar, or learn English CD sets for 3 dollars instead of the regular list price of thirty dollars. I like to buy books, software, music cd's, vhs tapes, dvd's and other resource materials for my classes at a 75 to 90 percent discount and so do the students.

The CNE exhibits are everywhere and have something for everyone. Some students love the gardens, gardening, and landscaping. Some students love the agricultural exhibits with all the food products, farm animals, farm equipment and the horse shows. Other students play at the sports pavilion to test their abilities with new sports challenges. Some like to see arts and crafts and art displays others like to participate in the "how to" demonstrations and create their own art piece. Some students just like to play the latest sega video games or sony games "be" pc gamers or x box pros and play on the newest equipment or game platform.

The 2009 CNE starts August 18 - see you there!

Canada Study and Tour Information

Canada is a wonderful country for international students and visitors who tour, study or vacation in this open modern society. Canada is the world leader in education and humanitarian peace keeping, medical and logistical aid to the entire world in times of need.

There are several exciting study and tour programs available for international English students. The study tours programs are a wonderful opportunity to see real Canadian wilderness and study in a living classroom.

The name “Canada” is believed to derive from an Iroquois term meaning village. Canada is the worlds second-largest country, eclipsed only by Russia. Canada's north boundary is the Arctic Ocean, the north-east boundary is Baffin Bay and Davis Strait, the east boundary is the Atlantic Ocean, the west boundary is the Pacific Ocean and the south borders the United States and Alaska to the north-west.

Canada contains an abundance of natural resources: timber, petroleum, natural gas, metallic minerals, precious gems, industrial minerals and fisheries. Canada has large areas of fertile, flat land across the Prairie provinces and surrounding the Great Lakes and St Lawrence River basin. Only 5 per cent of Canada's land is suitable for farming. Farming employs about 3 per cent of the population with about 280,000 farms. Wheat is the most important single crop, and Canada's produces about 16 per cent of the world's supply. Forests cover about 49 per cent of Canada's land area, about 4.2 million square km or 1.6 million square miles.

Canada contains more fresh water lakes and inland waters than any other country in the world. In addition to the Great Lakes shared with the US, Canada has 31 lakes more than 1,300 sq km (500 sq mi) in area. The are several great rivers in Canada. The St Lawrence drains the Great Lakes and flows into the Gulf of St Lawrence. The Saskatchewan flows into Lake Winnipeg and the Nelson flows from Lake Winnipeg into Hudson Bay. The Athabascan, Peace, Slave, and Mackenzie Rivers merge and flow north into the Arctic Ocean. The Fraser and the Columbia rivers both flow west into the Pacific Ocean.

Tourism is one of the leading industries in Canada. Every year Canada is visited by over 45 million tourists. About 730,000 square km or 282,000 square miles of scenic areas have been preserved in the natural state for use as national, marine, and provincial parks. The world-famous Jasper, Banff and Algonquin parks receives more than 10 million visitors annually.

Canada's major cities are Toronto, Montreal, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, and Ottawa. The major cities are distribution centers for exports and local manufacturing.

Most of Canada’s inhabitants live in the southern part of the country, and vast areas of the north are sparsely inhabited. The population of Canada is 32,507,874 (2004 estimate), compared with 27,296,859 during the 1991 census. The indigenous people of Canada who are officially designated the First Nations, are divided into nearly 600 groups, or bands and make up nearly 2 per cent of Canada’s population. The racial and ethnic make-up of the Canadian people is diverse with 34 per cent of the population composed of people of British or part-British origin and 27 per cent French or part-French origin, the Asian immigrants are 16 per cent, and the remainder of the population is composed of people of various ethnic origins, such as German, Italian, Ukrainian, Dutch, Scandinavian, Polish, Hungarian and Greek.

Education is compulsory for children from ages 6 to 16, and it is free until the completion of secondary school studies. Canada has more than 16,000 elementary and secondary schools, with a total enrollment of nearly 5.3 million pupils. Canada has 69 degree-granting universities and colleges with over 500,000 full-time students.

The three Toronto Universities are: York, Ryerson and the world famous University of Toronto.
